Jaundice in darker skin tone babies

Resources developed as part of the Jaundice in Darker Skin Tone Babies Programme

This page provides information and resources to help parents, families and healthcare professionals recognise jaundice in babies with Black and Brown skin tones.

Jaundice is very common in newborn babies and, in many cases, it is mild and gets better on its own. However, jaundice can sometimes be serious, so it is important that babies with possible signs of jaundice are checked early by a healthcare professional.

It is not always possible to tell how severe jaundice is just by looking at a baby, and a check may be needed to see if treatment is required. Early checking helps make sure babies receive the right care and can help prevent complications.

The signs of jaundice may appear differently in babies with darker skin tones, and the yellow colouring may not always be easy to notice on the skin.

This page brings together practical guidance, visual resources, and information on what signs to look for and when to seek medical advice.

These resources are designed to support families in recognising possible signs of jaundice and to help healthcare professionals provide safe and equitable care for all babies.

If you are concerned about your baby or think your baby may have jaundice, seek advice from a healthcare professional.
