Short film highlights the benefits of Wessex ComPASSION national pilot

The Wessex ComPASSION project is a national pilot to trial, test and evidence the impact of an integrated diabetes and mental health pathway for the assessment, referral and treatment of people with Type 1 diabetes and disordered eating.

ComPASSION (Combined Pathway for Assessment and Support for the Syndrome of Insulin OmissioN –Type 1 diabetes) is an innovative, multidisciplinary approach collaborating across diabetes and eating disorders teams.

The pilot aims are to:
• educate health care professionals to develop knowledge, skills and competencies in each other’s specialties
• increase awareness of eating disorders in people with Type 1 diabetes
• proactively screen for disordered eating and eating disorders in Type 1 diabetes populations
• create a new integrated pathway of care including an increased range of therapy options.

In this short film, two specialists working on the project talk about why it’s needed, how it’s making a difference, and their hopes for the future of the project. They are:

  • Nikki Stacey, Diabetes Specialist Nurse at Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
  • Micki Bennett, Eating Disorder Specialist at Dorset Healthcare University NHS Foundation Trust

This pilot project model has been funded by NHS England and NHS Improvement until July 2021.
