A series of dementia-themed webinars

Dementia webinars

We host a series of regular dementia webinars covering key topics aimed at all those with an interest in dementia and older persons mental health. These webinars are usually recorded, and when they are we’ll share the films on these pages.

Webinar 8: Dorset dementia pathway – December 2021

Dorset ICS has redesigned the whole of the dementia pathway from prevention to end of life and started implementing the new model in April 2021. Dr Paul French and colleagues described how they went about this to the ICS Dementia Leads from the South East of England

Webinar 7: Disease modifying medications – May 2021

Disease modifying treatments (DMT’s) for dementia are on the horizon. This webinar discusses the potential impact of DMT’s for Alzheimer’s disease on South East clinical pathways.

The webinar aims to share recent DMT trial result, discuss the potential impact on the clinical pathways and raise awareness of the opportunities and challenges involved in DMT delivery. A summary report is here and the webinar can be watched below:

Webinar 6: Dementia and Care Homes – Dec 2020

Good care enables people to live well with dementia and an estimated 70% of people living in care homes have dementia. In this webinar over 65 attendees from across the South East region listened to speakers presenting on:

  • Interfacing with care homes: Surrey and NH Hants describe how they provide dedicated care home pathway services and their model for good quality care
  • Dementia champions in care homes: A look at how the Berkshire Integrated Care Home Support Team supported care staff to become Dementia Champions
  • Oral health and dementia: Why oral health is important and how we can deliver good oral health for people with dementia in care homes
  • We Check dementia care: A toolkit and resource for care homes to identify and deliver high quality care

Webinar 5: Delirium and Dementia – Nov 2020

  2. Delirium – Models of Care
  3. Lesson learnt Developing Greater Manchester’s Delirium Pathway

Webinar 4: Dementia Imaging – July 2020

  • discuss Covid-19 impact on dementia diagnosis pathway
  • look at possible approaches and recommendations

You can view the associated report here and the webinar can be viewed below:

Webinar 3: Overview of factors affecting patient outcome – July 2020

This webinar was not recorded. Dementia remains a diagnosis with significant impact with a need to balance the timeliness of diagnosis with patient experience and outcomes. Covid has forced people to adapt to new ways of working which become the new normal.

Recent webinars have brought clinicians, service managers and commissioners together to consider factors affecting the dementia pathway in a Covid environment.

An overview of factors identified that affect the pathway has been summarised in this document.

Webinar 2: Restore and Recovery Planning for Memory Assessment Services (MAS) – July 2020

Presentations from three MAS services across the South East footprint covered the following topics:

  • Showcasing some of South East MAS services and how they have either adapted or ‘stood down’ during the COVID pandemic and what services have been available for dementia patients especially those in crisis
  • Outlining their draft recovery plans going forwards both in the short term and longer term as we slowly ease out of the pandemic. Featuring use of remote consultations (use of phone and video) and what diagnostic tools have been used, taking history remotely and how to deliver diagnosis including subtypes remotely/face-to-face. Lessons learnt from ‘new ways of working’ and what can be done differently going forwards?
  • Q & A session to allow opportunity for discussion and sharing of best practice

Webinar 1: The interface between primary and secondary care – June 2020

This webinar was not recorded. Primary care and memory services are both working to deliver services in extraordinarily challenging times. An initial webinar looked at the experiences of memory clinics, their capability for receiving referrals and undertaking assessments, the tools and tests available for making a diagnosis and the management of risk.

This webinar was an opportunity to acknowledge that we need to work as part of a wider system and to understand and explore the interface with primary care. There are new opportunities for the way that we manage care across multiple pathways.

You can view the full report on this subject here.

Please feel free to disseminate this freely across your local networks. Further details about the dementia network can also be found here: southeastclinicalnetworks.nhs.uk/dementia
