Charlie Waller and NHS England South East join forces to help primary care professionals support people with mental health problems.
Common mental health problems are the focus of new online training led by Charlie Waller Nurse Lead Dr Sheila Hardy.
The 26-minute training film provides guidance to nurses and allied primary care health professionals on how to recognise when a patient in their care has a common mental health problem, and what to do next.
This film has been developed by the Charlie Waller Trust in partnership with NHS England South East. The content has been adapted from training endorsed by the Royal College of Nursing and is accompanied by a downloadable handout and notes for facilitators.
Topics the training film covers include the conditions defined as common mental health problems; screening for depression and anxiety; assessing suicide risk; and the agencies that offer treatment.
It can be viewed in full or in four parts:
- Part 1: Common mental health problems
- Part 2: Responsibility of primary care
- Part 3: Identifying the risk of suicide
- Part 4: Treatments
The film’s author, Dr Sheila Hardy, is the practice nurse lead at the Charlie Waller Trust, and dual-qualified as RMN and RGN. She said: “I find it quite shocking that one in three people attending primary care experience a mental health problem but only 24% of them receive treatment for it.
“We hope this online training will give healthcare professionals the skills and confidence to support people with mental health problems and offer the correct treatment options.”
