Trish Mugwangi

RM, BSc Nursing, Dip. Midwifery

Born into a family with deep roots in healthcare, Trish began her nursing journey in 1994. Initially training as a nurse, her passion for midwifery was ignited during her placements, leading her to qualify as a Midwife in 1998. Throughout her career, she has embraced diverse roles, including Teenager Pregnancy Midwife, Sure Start Midwife, and Community Midwife, with a focus on caring for women in underserved and often overlooked communities.

As a Professional Midwifery Advocate, Trish takes great joy in supporting both midwives and families, continuously working to enhance the well-being of staff and patients alike.
In 2020, she became a Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic Champion at Darent Valley Hospital, where she identified the disproportionate impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on ethnic minority pregnant individuals. This led her to establish the Maternity Equality Diversity Inclusion (MEDI) Focus Group, which was recognized by the Care Quality Commission for its outstanding contributions.

In 2022, Trish took on the role of Equity and Equalities Lead for the LMNS team, spearheading the Kent & Medway Equity Action Plan. This initiative aims to improve maternal and infant outcomes for Black, Asian, and Mixed ethnic groups, as well as those in deprived areas. Trish remains deeply committed to advocating for equality and improving the experiences of minority ethnic staff within the healthcare system.

Her dedication to improving maternity care in these areas has earned her several awards, including the Trust Innovation Award in 2008 and the Making The Difference Award for Culture and Diversity in 2022. In 2023, Trish was honoured with two awards at the Kent & Medway LMNS Recognition Event: Outstanding Contribution to Equity and Equality, and Outstanding Contribution to Co-production. She also received the Healthwatch Healthcare Award for her work in engaging vulnerable communities to tackle inequalities in maternity and neonatal care in Kent.
